The Indian Navy is set to commission its latest stealth frigate INS Taragiri (F41), on April 3, 2026, in a ceremony to be presided over by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh The fourth ship of the Project 17A class, Taragiri is a 6,670-tonne guided-missile frigate built by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) in Mumbai. The vessel features a stealth hull design with a significantly reduced radar cross-section, enabling low-visibility operations.With indigenous content exceeding 75 per cent, the warship has been built with components sourced from over 200 Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), in line with the government's Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative.Taragiri is powered by a Combined Diesel or Gas (CODOG) propulsion system, designed for high-speed and long-endurance operations across multiple mission profiles. Its weapons suite includes supersonic surface-to-surface missiles, medium-range surface-to-air missiles, and an anti-submarine warfare suite. All systems are integrated through a Combat Management System.Beyond combat roles, the frigate is configured for Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) operations, reflecting the Indian Navy's mandate for a broader range of maritime missions.Project 17A, of which Taragiri is a part, represents an upgraded iteration of the earlier Shivalik-class frigates, incorporating improvements in stealth, weapons integration, and onboard sensors. The class is being built across two shipyards MDL in Mumbai and Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) in Kolkata with a total of seven ships on order.
