14,488 student deaths recorded in 2024; rising faster than overall rate: NCRB

Student suicides in India have recorded a significant rise, accounting for 8.5% of the total suicides in 2024. The number of student suicides climbed to a record high of 14,488 in 2024, marking a 4.3% increase from 13,892 cases in 2023. Student suicides have grown at a sharper pace than overall suicides, rising 15.7% in five years and 62.2% over 10 years. Experts attribute the rise to academic pressure, untreated psychological distress, and weak support systems, calling for stronger counselling systems and mental health support.
