U.S. President Donald Trump on Monday said Washington has held “very good and productive” conversations with Iran and has ordered a temporary halt to planned military strikes on Iranian power plants and energy infrastructure.In a post on his Truth Social account, Trump said the decision followed “in-depth, detailed, and constructive” discussions over the past two days aimed at achieving a “complete and total resolution” of hostilities in West Asia.“Based on the tenor and tone” of the talks, he said he had instructed the Department of Defense to postpone “any and all military strikes” for a five-day period, with the pause contingent on progress in ongoing negotiations.The U.S. president added that discussions with Iran will continue through the week, signalling a possible diplomatic opening amid heightened regional tensions and concerns over energy security.This comes after Trump issued a 48-hour ultimatum to Iran over Strait of Hormuz. On Saturday he said Washington would “obliterate” Iran’s power plants if Tehran fails to fully reopen the Strait of Hormuz within 48 hours, signalling a dramatic escalation in the conflict.“If Iran doesn't FULLY OPEN, WITHOUT THREAT, the Strait of Hormuz, within 48 HOURS from this exact point in time, the United States of America will hit and obliterate their various POWER PLANTS, STARTING WITH THE BIGGEST ONE FIRST!” Trump said on social media.The ultimatum came just a day after Trump suggested the possibility of “winding down” the war.
