The Kerala Police have adopted legal action in connection with the circulation of an AI-generated synthetic video on the social media platform X, which allegedly depicted the Prime Minister and constitutional authorities, including the Election Commission of India (ECI), in a misleading and defamatory manner during the ongoing Assembly election process.
According to an official release, the content was brought to notice through “official channels, including inputs from the ECI”. Upon verification, officials determined that the video had the potential to mislead the public, undermine the credibility of constitutional bodies, and adversely impact the conduct of free and fair elections.
Steps to curb spread of content
In accordance with the Model Code of Conduct and applicable legal provisions, the Cyber Operations wing of Kerala Police has initiated steps to curb the further spread of the content. Legal notices were issued to the platform under relevant provisions of the Information Technology Act and associated rules, seeking immediate removal of the material.
As part of the legal process, a case has been registered at the Cyber Crime Police Station in Thiruvananthapuram City against the X account “Laxmi N Raju (@valiant_Raju)” and others involved. Official sources confirmed that an investigation is underway to determine responsibility and initiate appropriate legal action.
The police have reiterated their commitment to safeguarding the integrity of the electoral process and emphasised that prompt, lawful and impartial action will be taken against any attempts to disrupt or influence elections through misinformation or unlawful digital content.
The public has been urged to remain vigilant and avoid creating, sharing or amplifying unverified or unverified or misleading content, particularly during the election period.
