The government on Thursday said India’s fuel situation remains “fully secure and under control”, asserting that the country currently has around 60 days of fuel stock cover and dismissing reports of shortages as a “deliberate, coordinated misinformation campaign” aimed at triggering panic, according to a statement. The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas said there is no shortage of petrol, diesel or LPG anywhere in the country, with all 1 lakh-plus retail fuel outlets operating normally and dispensing fuel without any rationing. It added that isolated instances of panic buying at some outlets were driven by misleading social media posts, even as supplies were maintained and depots operated through the night to meet demand. Oil companies have also extended credit to petrol pumps to over three days from the earlier one day to ensure uninterrupted availability.India, the world’s fourth-largest refiner and fifth-largest exporter of petroleum products, continues to supply fuels to over 150 countries, with domestic availability structurally assured. All refineries are operating at over 100% utilisation, and crude oil supplies for the next 60 days have already been secured, the ministry said, adding there is “no supply gap”.Despite tensions around the Strait of Hormuz, crude inflows remain stable, with higher volumes from over 41 global suppliers — particularly from the western hemisphere — offsetting any disruption. India’s total storage capacity stands at 74 days, while actual stock cover is about 60 days, including crude, refined products and strategic reserves stored in underground caverns. With procurement for the next two months already tied up, the government said fuel availability remains assured for the months ahead. On LPG, the ministry said supplies are adequate, with domestic refinery output ramped up by 40% to 50 thousand metric tonnes per day, meeting more than 60% of demand. Import dependence has reduced, with the balance requirement of about 30 TMT being met through secured cargoes. Around 800 TMT of LPG shipments from countries including the US, Russia and Australia are already en route, ensuring steady supplies. Oil companies are currently delivering over 50 lakh cylinders daily, with demand easing after a spike driven by panic ordering. Also Read:The government also clarified that the push for piped natural gas (PNG) is part of a long-term energy transition and not a response to any LPG shortage. India currently produces 92 MMSCMD of natural gas against a requirement of 191 MMSCMD, with city gas networks expanding significantly in recent years.Cautioning against misinformation, the ministry said misleading videos and fabricated claims about shortages or emergency measures are being circulated to create unnecessary anxiety. It warned that such actions are punishable under law and urged citizens to rely only on official communications for accurate information.
