Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation ( IRCTC ) has taken a stern view of complaints over the quality of Amul curd served onboard the Patna–Tatanagar Vande Bharat Express, initiating punitive action against the catering licensee and seeking an explanation from the dairy major."IRCTC has viewed the complaints very seriously about quality of Amul curd served in Patna-Tata Vande Bharat train," the corporation said, adding that it has come down heavily on the licensee. “Apart from imposing hefty penalty, process of terminating the contract and blacklisting the licensee of the train, IRCTC has summoned the ‘Amul’ on 27th March for explanation about the grave Quality concern related to Amul Curd.”The action follows passenger complaints that surfaced online, flagging substandard or spoiled curd being served during the journey. The issue quickly gained traction on social media, prompting the railways’ catering arm to step in and order an immediate probe into food quality and handling practices.According to a statement, IRCTC has been fined Rs 10 lakh. In addition, the onboard service provider has been penalised Rs 50 lakh and directed to terminate the contract. The episode puts the spotlight back on food quality aboard premium trains like Vande Bharat, which are marketed as a step-up in passenger experience. IRCTC has in recent years tightened norms around hygiene, packaging and vendor accountability, including penalties for lapses and mandatory sourcing standards for branded food items. The summoning of Amul — a rare move against a major FMCG supplier — signals that accountability may extend beyond onboard vendors to upstream suppliers, as IRCTC seeks to ring-fence quality in its catering chain.
