Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu has reviewed an ambitious plan to transform five key stretches in the capital into 24x7 “complete street” corridors — a model aimed at making roads more pedestrian-friendly, economically vibrant and socially active.The proposed redesign goes beyond conventional road upgrades, reimagining streets as shared public spaces. Plans include wide pedestrian walkways, dedicated cycle tracks, improved street lighting, short-duration parking, resting shelters and CCTV-based surveillance to enhance safety, particularly for women and children.A key feature of the proposal is the integration of movable vendor zones and informal craft bazaars, designed to promote a thriving night-time economy and activate public spaces beyond daylight hours.The Delhi government , in coordination with the Centre, is expected to undertake feasibility studies for the project, following which timelines for implementation will be finalised.Five stretches have been identified in the first phase. These include the Minto Road–ITO–Karkardooma corridor, a crucial east Delhi link with strong metro connectivity; the Minto Road–Aruna Asaf Ali Marg–Jawaharlal Nehru Marg–Delhi Gate stretch connecting central Delhi to its historic core; and the Netaji Subhash Marg–Shantivan–Mahatma Gandhi Marg corridor along the Yamuna, near the ITO and IP Estate Metro stations, offering both riverfront access and proximity to heritage zones.Also included are the busy Dhaula Kuan–Jail Road/Cariappa Marg–Tilak Nagar crossing and the Uttam Nagar–Tilak Nagar–Rajouri Garden stretch along Najafgarh Road, both high-traffic corridors with significant commercial activity and multi-modal connectivity.Officials said the initiative is expected to ease congestion, cut pollution and improve last-mile connectivity, while transforming everyday roads into dynamic public spaces that support both mobility and community life.The LG has also suggested that the Kingsway Camp–Mall Road stretch be considered in subsequent phases, as part of a broader push to expand economic activity and employment linked to the night-time economy.The design framework prioritises a shift towards public transport and non-motorised mobility. It also addresses long-standing civic challenges, including urban flooding and dust pollution, through advanced stormwater drainage systems, silt management and the addition of green verges and roadside plantations.Execution will follow strict specifications with third-party quality checks to ensure high construction standards. Officials added that a long-term operations and maintenance framework — potentially supported by revenue-generating models — will be built into the project to ensure sustainability.The feasibility study, likely to begin next month, will shape the rollout timeline. Sandhu has emphasised the need for close coordination among key agencies such as the Public Works Department, Municipal Corporation of Delhi and Delhi Development Authority, given the city’s complex institutional structure.A detailed presentation on the proposal was made to the LG by the School of Planning and Architecture Delhi, outlining a model where roads seamlessly integrate pedestrians, cyclists, public transport and private vehicles while also enabling social and recreational use.
