After weeks of speculation, major Bay Area tech company Oracle announced mass layoffs and notified the fired employees in an email at 6 AM, reports New York Post. Oracle's sweeping round of layoffs will also have a significant impact on its workforce in India. Globally, the company has approxiametly fired 30,000 employees, PTI reported.Employees across teams in Oracle woke up to early morning emails as early as 6 am and they were informed that their positions had been eliminated with immediate effect. The message from one of the world’s largest software companies, chaired by billionaire Larry Ellison, informed “thousands” of workers across multiple countries that Tuesday would be their last day. The US-based IT company is planning another round of layoff within a month, PTI reported citing sources.Some reports suggested that around 12,000 jobs in India could be affected, though this could not be independently verified. The company employs close to 30,000 in India. An email sent to the company did not elicit a response.The layoffs have significantly impacted employees at its India development centres, with roles affected across the Oracle Fusion Cloud Applications division and Oracle Cloud Infrastructure, including engineering, data centre operations, and AI/ML functions."In India, around 12,000 employees have been laid off. The company is planning another mass layoff within a month," said two people impacted by the retrenchment, including one from the company's human resource department.“After careful consideration of Oracle’s current business needs, we have made the decision to eliminate your role as part of a broader organizational change,” copies of the email viewed by Business Insider stated.“As a result, today is your last working day. … Thank you for your contributions to our organization.” The email also asked employees to provide their personal email addresses for future correspondence. Employees in the US, India, Canada and other regions reported getting the news that was from “Oracle Leadership".Employees have been asked to immediately provide a personal email address to receive follow-up communication, including FAQs and separation-related documents. The company clarified these email IDs will be used solely for correspondence related to severance and transition support.The company has offered 15 days' salary to each employee who has completed a year of service in India, in addition to one month of unpaid wages till termination date, leave encashment, gratuity based on eligibility and pay for a one-month notice period.Oracle has also offered a two-month salary as a top-up. However, the severance package is available for those who voluntarily and amicably resign from the company.Oracle's latest round of layoffs reportedly stemmed from the US tech giant's aggressive push to increase spending on artificial intelligence infrastructure. According to the NY Post, the terminated employees were told that after signing their termination paperwork they would be “eligible to receive a severance package subject to the terms and conditions of the severance plan.”According to documents reviewed by Business Insider, laid-off employees in the US will receive four weeks of base salary, along with an additional one week of severance for each year of service, capped at a maximum of 26 weeks.Oracle has declined to comment when asked about how many jobs were being cut. As of May 2025, the software company employed around 162,0000 full-time employees, according to its annual filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission.(With inputs from PTI, TOI)
