In as many as 21 assembly constituencies across Tamil Nadu, neither the DMK’s Rising Sun nor the AIADMK ’s Two Leaves will appear on the ballot as the main contesting symbol. This unusual scenario has emerged because several alliance partners are contesting under their own party symbols rather than aligning strictly under the major Dravidian parties.According to data from previous polls, such multi-cornered contests without the two dominant symbols have occurred 11 times in 2021, while there were none in 2016 when all AIADMK allies contested under the Two Leaves. Here is the list of key constituencies where allies are fighting under their own symbols:This fragmentation creates a more open field in these seats, especially where smaller or newer parties are in the fray.According to TOI, the absence of the two major Dravidian symbols in these 21 constituencies could open the door for emerging players such as Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) led by actor Vijay and Naam Tamilar Katchi (NTK). With voters not bound by traditional loyalty to the Rising Sun or Two Leaves, anti-incumbency or strong local mobilisation by TVK and NTK could lead to surprising outcomes. In several of these seats, the contest has already become multi-cornered, increasing the chances of vote splitting among established parties and giving smaller outfits a realistic shot at winning. The 2026 elections are shaping up to be one of the most fragmented in recent Tamil Nadu history, with alliance arithmetic and independent symbol contests likely to play a decisive role in many constituencies.
