Kuwait said a drone attack on Thursday set off a fire at the Mina Abdullah refinery, marking the second major blaze at an oil facility in the small Gulf nation within hours. The incident came shortly after the nearby Mina Al-Ahmadi refinery was also hit by a drone attack earlier the same day, triggering a separate fire. Both facilities are located in southern Kuwait and are part of the country’s critical oil infrastructure. Emergency crews were deployed to contain the fires, while authorities assessed the extent of the damage and investigated the source of the attacks.Kuwait, a major oil producer and member of OPEC, relies heavily on its refining capacity to process crude oil for both domestic use and export markets. Its refineries, including Mina Abdullah Refinery and Mina Al-Ahmadi Refinery, form a backbone of the country’s energy sector. While Kuwait has historically been insulated from direct attacks on its energy infrastructure compared to some regional peers, recent years have seen rising concerns over drone and missile threats targeting oil facilities across the Gulf. The fire shows how the fighting between Israel and Iran has been expanding and spreading all across the Gulf.
