The mother of the RG Kar Medical College victim has announced her intention to enter politics and contest the upcoming West Bengal Assembly elections as a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate.Speaking to reporters, she said her decision is driven by a desire to seek justice for her daughter and bring about political change in the state.The victim’s mother indicated that she may be fielded from the Panihati constituency in North 24 Parganas. She added that her name is expected to feature in the BJP’s second list of candidates, which is likely to be released soon.She revealed that she had received an offer from the party earlier but was not in a position to accept it at the time.Explaining her decision, she said she now feels ready to take on a political role.“I had received an offer from the BJP long back, but I was not mentally prepared then. Now, I have decided to contest because I want justice for my daughter,” she said.She also alleged that the state government attempted to hinder the investigation and delay justice in the case.The victim’s mother criticised the current administration, accusing it of failing to ensure accountability. She further stated that her political entry is aimed at removing the present government from power.The BJP has been vocal in criticising the state government over the handling of the case, while the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) has denied all allegations and maintained that due process is being followed.BJP leader Arjun Singh had recently met the victim’s parents, fuelling speculation about her possible entry into politics.The family has also alleged that opposition parties have not done enough to hold the government accountable.The case relates to the rape and murder of a 31-year-old doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in August 2024. The incident triggered widespread protests by doctors and civil society groups across West Bengal and beyond.It soon became a major political flashpoint, with allegations and counter-allegations between political parties intensifying the debate over law and order in the state.Inputs from agencies
