Assam Cabinet approves UCC implementation, to be tabled in Assembly on May 26

The Assam Cabinet has approved the implementation of the uniform civil code (UCC) in the state. A legislation in this regard will be tabled in the assembly on May 26, the last day of the first session of the new assembly. The UCC will regulate minimum age of marriage, protect women's right to family property, abolish polygamy, and mandate compulsory registration of marriages and divorces. All tribal people in Assam will be kept outside the purview of UCC, along with all religious rituals, customs, and traditions.
