Brazil's Senate blocks Lula's Supreme Court nominee, first rejection in 132 years

Brazil's Senate has dealt a political blow to President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva by rejecting his nomination to the Supreme Court. Only 34 senators voted in favor of Jorge Messias, while 42 rejected his appointment, falling short of the 41 votes needed for approval. This is the first time in over 130 years that a Supreme Court nominee has been rejected by the Senate.
