How Water DNA Exposed a Giant Squid off Western Australia

Scientists have discovered evidence of giant squid off the coast of Western Australia by analyzing DNA samples from the water column. This was done using environmental DNA (eDNA) barcoding, which identified hundreds of species, including the first record of a giant squid in Western Australian waters. Submarine canyons, found at the margins of continental shelves, act as key feeding, spawning, and recruitment grounds for many marine species and are biodiversity hotspots. However, they remain largely unexplored and under threat from human activities such as fishing, pollution, and mineral extraction.
