Retired engineer Moulay Ould Rais, who heads the school's parents' association, believes this change will benefit everyone, especially impoverished families who suffered when private schools emerged. Education in Mauritania often ranks poorly due to low investment in infrastructure and teachers, with at least 30 percent of school-aged children not enrolled in school.
