In the Super Sunday afternoon clash between Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Rajasthan Royals (RR), RR would be thinking that they are favourites. Not just because they’ve won four out of five but because almost everything KKR struggle with directly plays into RR’s strengths.

KKR have the worst Powerplay bowling numbers this season and now they’re up against the most destructive opening pair in the tournament. Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and Yashasvi Jaiswal have been ruthless. Moreover, KKR’s own batting have faltered, switching between opening pairs match after match.

KKR vs RR match to be decided in powerplay?

KKR’s biggest problem this season has been right at the top. They’ve already lost 12 wickets in the Powerplay in six games and are scoring at just over nine runs per over. That’s a bad combination. You’re losing wickets and not scoring fast enough either. Now look at RR. In T20 cricket, the powerplay period often decides results.

Meanwhile, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi alone has 200 runs at a strike rate of 263 this season. Jaiswal isn’t far behind in terms of impact. If KKR don’t get early wickets, this can run away quickly.

And the numbers don’t help them either. KKR have the worst Powerplay bowling average and economy this season. That’s exactly the phase RR dominate.

If there’s one area where KKR can still make a game out of this, it’s spin. Eden Gardens tends to grip a bit in the afternoon, and they have two quality options in Sunil Narine and Varun Chakravarthy. Narine has been economical again this season, and Varun has a strong record against RR with 13 wickets in 10 games. There are matchups here as well.

Narine has kept Hetmyer and Jadeja quiet historically. Varun has dismissed Donovan Ferreira three times in ten balls. So if KKR drag this game into the middle overs with wickets in hand, they at least give themselves a chance.

Rahane hasn’t been able to control games. Rinku Singh is out of touch. Finn Allen has already been dropped. Cameron Green showed signs in the last game, but even he hasn’t contributed consistently across phases. And then there’s the lack of support from the pace unit. Injuries to Harshit Rana and Akash Deep, and the delay around Matheesha Pathirana, have left them short on quality. Although Pathirana has joined the team, it is unlikely for him to feature today.

Meanwhile, RR’s bigger concern is their middle order. Parag hasn’t scored (49 runs in five games), and Jadeja hasn’t really influenced games with bat or ball. But bringing Hetmyer back should fix part of that.

16 (7 in Kolkata) RR Won: 14 (4 in Kolkata)

KKR are running out of time. Another loss and they’re almost out of the tournament. But right now, they look like a team trying to fix too many things at once. RR, on the other hand, just need to go back to what they were doing in the first four games. Attack upfront, control through spin, and finish clean. Unless KKR find a way to win the Powerplay , it’s hard to see them stopping RR.

Prediction: Rajasthan Royals to beat Kolkata Knight Riders.
