Mali leader Goita takes defence post after minister killed

Mali's military government leader, Assimi Goita, has taken on the role of defence minister following the killing of the previous minister, Sadio Camara, in an attack by al-Qaeda-linked groups working with Tuareg separatists. Goita will remain president while also taking on the new role. General Oumar Diarra has been appointed as delegate minister to the defence ministry. The attack killed at least 23 people, including civilians and children, and was part of a larger security crisis in Mali, which has been beset by security crises since at least 2012.
