Operation Roaring Lion obscures Israel’s worsening traffic toll, road safety statistics

Road fatalities in Israel have declined overall in 2026, but the improvement is largely attributed to a significant drop in traffic during Operation Roaring Lion in March. Despite increased enforcement efforts and a special budget increase for road safety measures, the number of road accidents and casualties continues to rise, with 157 people killed this year compared to 147 in the same period last year, an increase of nearly 7%. The Transportation Ministry is considering increasing penalty points for offenses such as speeding and running red lights.
