State media: Iran carries out execution linked to 2022 protests

Iran's judiciary is accused of subjecting Mehrab Abdollahzadeh to 42 days of psychological and physical torture to extract a confession. Abdollahzadeh, a former barber, was detained since October 2022 and had his death sentence upheld by Iran's Supreme Court in December 2025. He was accused of killing a security officer during unrest in Urmia. The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights has condemned a recent surge in arrests and executions in Iran following mass protests.
