Thailand’s Thaksin Shinawatra released from prison

Thailand's former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra has been released from Klong Prem Central Prison in Bangkok after serving a one-year sentence for a corruption-related charge. Hundreds of people, including his family and political allies, greeted him as he left the prison, chanting "We love Thaksin". Thaksin will be required to wear an electronic ankle monitor for the remainder of his sentence. He had been imprisoned for eight months before being granted parole due to his good behaviour, age, and low risk of reoffending.
