This incident once occurred during the ICC T20 World Cup 2026, while it later flared up again amid the recent controversy between Rawalpindiz batter Daryl Mitchell and Quetta Gladiators' mystery spinner Usman Tariq.

Daryl Mitchell vs Usman Tariq controversy in the PSL

A fresh controversy has erupted in the Pakistan Super League, featuring the match between the Quetta Gladiators and the Rawalpindiz. The Gladiators spinner's unique pause was protested by the opposition batter, Daryl Mitchell.

When Usman Tariq used his general pause during the middle overs of the game between the Rawalpindiz and the Quetta Gladiators. Daryl Mitchell was frustrated by his trademark prolonged stutter, and hence, he stepped away twice in the same over.

This led to a major fiasco, and Mitchell himself claimed after the game that if the bowler has the right to pause midway through the action on several occasions, then he can do the same. He also slammed the bowler, claiming that this kind of thing can happen in street cricket, not in international cricket.

Ravichandran Ashwin praises NZ cricketer for his firm stand against Tariq

During the 2026 ICC T20 World Cup, former Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin claimed that the batter should have the liberty to step away from their stance if they feel frustrated with the uncanny pause in their bowling action.

He went on to claim that if the pause isn't consistent, then the batter has every right to move away. He also claimed that it's up to the umpires and the match referees to time the pause for his delivery.

He also praised Mitchell for his actions in the PSL game between the two teams. He further stressed that the captains and opposition batters should raise this issue in front of the match referees and the umpires.

Usman Tariq demands penalty runs for Daryl Mitchell's controversial conduct

Usman Tariq has not stepped away from immense criticism this time, as he has strongly protested against Daryl Mitchell's act and the support extended to the NZ batter by the former Indian spinner.

He has defended his own actions and went on to claim that if such an action is repeated deliberately by the batters, then the umpires should have the discretion to warn the batter and issue a dangerous penalty to the batting side.

He wrote in his Instagram story, "Unsporting Conduct (Foul Play): If the batter does this continuously to deliberately distract the bowler or waste time, it can be deemed unfair play. The umpire has the discretion to warn the batter, and if it continues, issue a penalty (usually 5 penalty runs to the fielding side)."
