2 Sets of Human Remains Found in Suspected Bear Attacks

Human remains were found in suspected bear attacks in northern Japan. A 69-year-old woman's body was discovered with injuries on her face and head in Hachimantai City, Iwate Prefecture, after she went into the forest to pick edible wild plants. Another body was found in the Yamagata Prefecture two days prior. Authorities confirmed a separate death of a 55-year-old woman last month as the first fatal bear attack of 2026. Brown bears inhabit Hokkaido, while Asiatic black bears are found on Honshu, where the incidents occurred.
