Prototype fast breeder reactor | Nuclear paradox

A fast breeder reactor 'breeds' more nuclear fuel than it consumes and uses fast neutrons to initiate nuclear fission. It was built in France, becoming critical in 1985 and commercial in 1986. The reactor operated for 11 years, producing less than 20% of its potential energy and meeting under 1% of France's electricity demand. It was shut down due to technical and political issues, and a drop in uranium prices.
