Clean electricity meets all new demand, curbing fossil fuels, says Ember

Low-emissions energy sources met all new global electricity demand for the first time in 2025, with solar power meeting three-quarters of the new demand and wind power meeting almost all the rest. Low-emissions sources, including solar, wind, biofuels, hydro-electricity and nuclear power, provided a record 42.6 percent of the world's electricity consumption in 2025. Fossil fuels provided the majority, but their share is expected to shrink as clean energy gains dominance.
