Consumers lost $2.1 billion to social media scams in 2025, FTC reports

The U.S. Federal Trade Commission reports that Americans lost $2.1 billion to social media scams in 2025. Losses from social media scams have increased eightfold, with social media scams resulting in higher losses than any other method scammers used to contact consumers. Social media scams take many forms, including shopping scams and investment schemes, with people often losing money to unfamiliar websites or fake investment platforms.
