COP31 hosts set 35% global electrification target

COP31 co-presidency of Turkey and Australia has proposed raising electricity's share of global final energy demand from 20% to 35% by 2035. This "35x35" target is backed by analysis from the International Energy Agency and the International Renewable Energy Agency, aiming to support the Paris Agreement and keep global warming within 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels. The proposal is driven by the need to accelerate the shift to clean electricity due to a spike in fuel prices caused by the West Asia war and supply chain disruptions.
