They are often rescued and rehabilitated by nonprofit groups like Free the Bears, which specializes in rehabilitating wildlife rescued from the illegal trade. In rare cases, tips from the public lead to their rescue, as was the case when a Spanish tourist noticed a pangolin being transported in a minivan in Laos and alerted Free the Bears. The organization's staff then intervened to rescue the animal.
