Eyewitness says Modena tragedy could have been even worse

A car driven by a 31-year-old Italian of Moroccan heritage ploughed through a crowded city centre in Modena, injuring eight people. The driver, with a history of mental health problems, mowed down cyclists and pedestrians before crashing into a shop window. There was no barrier preventing cars from entering the semi-pedestrianised street. The driver tried to flee, but was chased down and caught by four passersby, one of whom was injured. The incident has left the city in shock and residents demanding greater security.
