German firefighters forced to let wildfire burn across nature reserve

A forest fire is burning in a former military training site near the Brandenburg town of Jüterbog, which is now a nature reserve home to rare animal species. The fire has spread rapidly, affecting an area of around 113 hectares, and is expected to spread further due to strong winds. Firefighters are keeping their distance due to the presence of old munitions in the ground, which makes a direct firefighting operation too dangerous. Residents of surrounding villages are not in danger, according to emergency workers.
