Germany banks on new gas-fired power plants to secure energy supply

The German government has passed a move to ensure the security of electricity production by paving the way for the construction of new gas-fired power plants. These plants are intended to compensate for the phase-out of coal and act as a backup during periods of low renewable energy generation. The new plants are due to be built from 2031 at the latest and will be designed to run on hydrogen in a carbon-neutral manner after 2045
