India tests disaster info system, citizens receive ‘extremely severe alert’ on phone

Citizens received trial emergency alerts on their phones, with a loud beep and a message starting with 'Extremely severe alert'. The message stated that it was a test message from the Government of India, part of a nationwide testing and trial of a disaster alert system. The system is based on the Common Alerting Protocol and is being coordinated by the Department of Telecommunications and the National Disaster Management Authority.
