Myanmar’s blanket prison term reduction trims Aung San Suu Kyi’s sentence

Myanmar President Min Aung Hlaing has cut all prisoners' sentences by one-sixth, granting deposed leader Aung San Suu Kyi's sentence a further reduction. This measure comes on a public holiday, marking a common time for amnesties in Myanmar. Aung San Suu Kyi, serving a 27-year sentence, will now have to serve about 18 years, according to her legal team. She has been imprisoned since 2021, when a military coup toppled her democratically elected government.
