Tackling methane emissions key for climate change and energy security: IEA

Methane emissions from the fossil fuel sector account for about 35 percent of all methane emissions from human activity. The oil, gas and coal industries are the largest contributors, with oil being the largest source. Methane emissions from these operations are not falling despite known mitigation pathways. The International Energy Agency estimates that methane emissions total 124 million tonnes a year, with oil, coal and natural gas being the main sources. Reducing these emissions could help efforts to hold back climate change and increase energy security.
