Taiwan insists it is a sovereign, independent nation. Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te has stated that Taiwan does not need to declare formal independence as it already sees itself as a sovereign nation. Presidential spokesperson Karen Kuo reiterated that Taiwan is a sovereign, independent democratic country, committed to maintaining the status quo with China. Taiwan considers itself a separate nation, but most are in favour of maintaining their current status.
