He wanted to give her a birthday gift as a gesture of gratitude for her years of hard work, including working as a farm labourer, to fund his education. He earns ₹25,000 a month and thought flying her home would be a special treat, with fares reportedly between ₹1,500 and ₹2,000 per person.
