Why temperature records are being not only broken but smashed

Hundreds of temperature records have been broken in France and other parts of western Europe during an unprecedented heatwave. Temperatures have surpassed previous records, with some areas experiencing heat that would be exceptional even in the middle of summer. A "heat dome" has formed over Europe, trapping warm air underneath, and scientists attribute the extreme heat to human-caused climate change. Europe has been warming by 0.56C per decade over the last 30 years, making heat extremes significantly more intense.
