Atef Najib faces at least 10 charges in landmark Syria trial

A cousin of toppled Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad, Atef Najib, has appeared in court in Damascus, accused of at least 10 crimes including murder, torture and responsibility for massacres. Najib, the former head of political security in southern Syria's Deraa province, is accused of overseeing a violent crackdown on antigovernment protesters in Deraa during the 2011 uprising. He is being tried in the Fourth Criminal Court, with 75 plaintiffs filing cases against him.
